New EEG Technology Makes for Better Brain Reading
Recent developments have led to a portable but powerful new technology.
Posted September 18, 2014

Clinical psychologists have a long tradition of attempting to understand what is “on the mind” of their clients by use of psychological tests. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales, for example, have been used for decades to assess intelligence levels. And other empirically valid psychometric measures are commonly used to understand patient mood or personality functioning.
To this point, direct examination of brain activity as a window into the client’s mind has remained elusive. But advances in the field of brain examination using electroencephalographs (EEGs) may be changing all that.
The first EEG was developed in the 1920’s by the German psychiatrist Hans Berger. He developed it to test the biological electricity produced in the brain, and first used it during brain surgery performed in 1924 on a 17-year-old boy.
If the EEG has been around for almost a century, why is it so important now? Recent technological advancements may soon have a profound impact on how mental health practitioners diagnose mental illness.
Currently, we know that the EEG records activity in the brain through electrodes attached to the scalp. When neurons (electrical pulses the brain uses to send messages) fire, they produce a small current. The EEG reads and records this current between 250 and 2000 times a second. The graphs it makes of these readings are what we know as ‘brain waves.’
The EEG is primarily used to diagnose epilepsy. As of 2005, 70% of EEG referrals were for epilepsy. During an epileptic seizure there is a large spike in brain activity that the EEG has little difficulty detecting. Even then, it is used in conjunction with a clinical examination by a physician, not as the sole means of diagnosis.

The second most common use is to diagnose sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea. The EEG is effective at reading the brain waves produced during sleep, which show special patterns in those with sleep disorders.
Biomedical engineering professor Hans Hallez of Flanders’ University writes, “during the last two decades, increasing computational power has given researchers the tools to go a step further and try to find the underlying sources which generate [brain waves]. This activity is called EEG source localization.”
Source localization is the technique that tells us which part of the brain is communicating. With advances in neuroscience and imaging techniques, we know what activities are represented by different parts of the brain. For example, activity in the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe is related to vision and activity in special areas of the temporal lobe is associated with speech.
If you know what part of the brain is communicating and what it is responsible for, then you can start to build a picture of what brain waves from different parts of the brain mean. In theory, this is what some experts consider akin to mindreading.
But the game-changer is this: recent developments in the field have led to a portable EEG that is relatively cheap, effective, and requires no human scoring.

Philip Low, who is the founder, CEO, and chief scientific officer of NeuroVigil Inc., developed a complex algorithm in 2007 that allows one electrode to do the work of many. His company has developed what they have named the iBrain. It uses one wireless electrode sensor the size of a quarter to record brain activity with an app that works on a smartphone.
Low says, “our vision is that one day people will have access to their brain as routinely and as easily as they currently have to their blood pressure.” He hopes to code brain wave profiles of those suffering from mental illnesses into a database at NeuroVigil that receives information from iBrain users’ cell phones. The iBrain 3 is expected to cost around $100 and be available to the public in the next few years.
Low isn’t the only one pushing the boundaries of EEG technology using single electrode devices. Hashem Ashrafiuon, a mechanical engineering professor at Villanova University’s College of Engineering has developed similar technology. His work is being used in sports helmets that can instantly diagnose concussions by detecting large changes in brain waves that occur immediately after impact.

Ashrafiuon sees many applications for his work. “It can basically be used to diagnose any health problem that affects brain activity. We hope to monitor brain health in patients with mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stressdisorder, Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, and sleep and circadian disorders.”
article continues after advertisement
It is the belief of technology developers Low and Ashrafiuon that we will one day have brainwave profiles of all mental illnesses stored. Diagnosing a mental illness would be assisted by comparing brain wave profiles of a patient to a database of stored sample profiles, allowing for rapid diagnosis.
Does it sound too simple? Perhaps. Diagnosis of mental illness involves a substantial behavioral component. What the brain looks like may be a far cry from the choices a given individual makes, and how those choices affect later functioning.
Still, there is reason for guarded optimism about the developments in EEG technology. The portability and improved accuracy will help with the diagnosis of epilepsy and sleep disorders, allowing patients to be comfortable at home and still be monitored. The more physically and economically accessible it is the better.
In a few years you may be the proud owner of Low’s iBrain 3. But in all likelihood, it won’t replace mental health practitioners any more than a good toothbrush replaces a dentist.

EEG headsets track the electrical activity in your brain. Which one you buy depends on what you want to use it for.
EEG Headset Reviews: Our Recommendations At A Glance

Manipulating our body’s biology through biohacking is one way we can improve our experience of the world. Neurohacking, one of the forms of biohacking, has been particularly popular since the 80s. It refers to altering brain function to get a desired outcome, such as better focus, cognitive improvement, or creativity boost.
EEG headsets are neurofeedback devices that can help with neurohacking, as they have become commercially available in recent years. The idea is to give everybody a better insight into their brain and get some actual benefits like improved sleep, relaxation, and mental focus.

DARPA’s New Mind-Reading Binoculars Are Scary-Efficient At Identifying Enemies
The Military’s New Mind-Reading Binoculars Are Scary-Efficient
By

Remember Tony Stark’s augmented reality lenses from the Iron Man movies — the ones that separated civilians from hostiles, so the Iron Man knew whom to target? What about Luke Skywalker’s binoculars from Star Wars, which could automatically detect threats from further away than human eyes could see?
Now such threat-detecting devices aren’t just the fantasy of films. The U.S. military is developing binoculars that read the user’s own subconscious brainwaves to help identify threats from afar.
The goggles, announced this week by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, have been given the clunky name “Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System” — or CT2WS for short.
So if you’re the military’s main research and development branch, what do you do to help soldiers in combat more easier spot enemies? First, build a “120 megapixel camera capable of scanning across 120 degrees of view” to replace your soldier’s conventional binoculars, according to The Register. These can take multiple images with each scan and feed them to a software program to identify potential threats. Next, if you’re DARPA, quickly become frustrated, because nearly half the “threats” the best software program identifies aren’t threats at all, making them effectively useless for soldiers in the field.
But then, have a great idea.
“CT2WS built on the concept that humans are inherently adept at detecting the unusual,”the DARPA announcement of the threat-detection system reads. In less vague terms, this means that clever DARPA engineers had the idea to attach the binoculars to an electroencephalogram (EEG) cap, which actually “monitors brain signals in real-time.” The brainwaves and pictures snapped by the binoculars are transmitted to a laptop or another powerful computer, which crunches the data and flags noteworthy images that contain enemies lurking in the distance.
The addition of the EEG cap has cut the false-positive rate from 47 percent to only 9 percent. Add to that commercial radar, and the system is 100 percent effective in identifying enemies in field tests, DARPA claims.
How does this work so well? It turns out humans can accurately perceive such threats — just not consciously. Our unconscious minds are very good at sorting enemy soldiers from unusually-shaped bushes. This means that if you show a soldier an image of a far-away ‘something’, the soldier may not be able to tell you whether it’s a bush or combatant — but show him the image for a tenth of a second, and the subconscious mind will fire off a distinctive brainwave called a “P-300” when the ‘something’ seems like a threat.
DARPA said in 2007 that the binoculars should have a range of “1,000 to 10,000 meters” and be able to spot moving vehicles from up to 6 miles away, according to Wired.
This is not the first EEG-enabled device that has been announced this year: Recently EEG seems to have hit its stride, with NeuroSky’s popular Necomimi toy hitting stores and scientists at the University of California at Irvine announcing the first successful test of mind-controlled robotic legs.
Humans be warned: we’re now one step closer to becoming cyborgs.

Mind Control: How EEG Devices Will Read Your Brain Waves And Change Your World
The Invention That’s Making Mind Reading Easier Than Ever
By

True facts: Every time you have a thought or feeling, your brain produces weak but distinct electrical signals corresponding to that thought or feeling. Recording and deciphering those signals is called electroencephalography (EEG), and it has been medically possible since 1924. We’ve all seen what classical EEG devices look like: the electrode caps on the shaved heads, the gel dots and hundreds of tiny wires. Setup is labor intensive, the results are aesthetically unpleasing and the devices are incredibly uncomfortable to wear.
For Philip Low, a mathematician and biology student doing experiments with birds at the University of Chicago in 2007, the last of the complaints was particularly vexing. In a phone interview with The Huffington Post, Low talked about the problems he and other researchers faced trying to figure out if birds dreamed. There was evidence, he said, that birds “replayed songs in their heads” while they slept, but the results given by EEG devices were wildly unreliable. “The birds had to be drugged to sleep,” said Low, in order to attach the electrodes. But the drugs interfered with the birds’ sleep patterns, and Low’s results were thus inconclusive.
So Low set out to invent a new kind of EEG, one that would revolutionize mind reading — a field that he’s once again on the cusp of fundamentally changing five years later.
By 2009, Low had succeeded on his first invention, with “math so simple it could fit on a page.” The algorithms he invented allowed researchers to collect electrical signals from bird brains using just a single electrode, a technique now called “single-channel EEG.” They also allowed Low to graduate from the University of San Diego with a one-page thesis (“The shortest in the history of the university,” he said.) and a 350-page appendix.
But by the end of the same year, Low was ready to move beyond birds. He wanted to build a single-channel device for humans. When he approached incredulous investors, though, he said he had “every door shut in my face.”
“Tech people thought I was selling out, while CEOs thought I was a tech kid who couldn’t run a company,” he told HuffPost.
Nevertheless, Low took risks, applying for loans from as many banks as possible while maxing out every credit card in his name. The cash boost he received was enough to build a single-channel EEG device for humans (named the “iBrain” just before the iPhone came out) and a small company, “NeuroVigil,” around it. Subsequently, Low gained some fame when it was revealed that he was assisting Stephen Hawking. But thus far, the devices he’s produced have been “for medical and research use only,” he said.
But Low wasn’t alone in seeing the possibilities offered by single-channel EEG. In 2009, Australia-based hardware company Emotiv began producing $300 EEG-enabled gaming headsets under the brand name EPOC. Soon after, NeuroSky, a company claiming to make “bio-sensors for everybody,” began producing emotion-reading, mind-controlled cat ears called “Necomimi” to sell at anime conventions. Now, even the scientific community that once deprecated Low is taking a look at his single-channel EEG — and they’ve realized mind reading isn’t just for research anymore. On the contrary, it can be used in a myriad of ways, both malicious and benign.
Mario Frank isn’t a specialist in EEG. He told The Huffington Post via email that his research in Berkeley, Calif., is in computer hacking, including “key-logging, timing attacks, etc.” Frank’s research group, however, has an interest in the fact that commercial single-channel EEG devices “are becoming increasingly popular in the gaming and entertainment industries.” The group has produced a paper that looks at the developing EEG industry as currently defined by players like commercial EEG producer Emotiv.
Could these devices allow malicious hackers to gain access to our minds? Yes, according to some. By gaining access to the software used to record and analyze electrical signals picked up by the EEG, hackers could build “brain spyware” apps that could potentially trick users into offering up personal information, Gizmodo wrote in a story on mind-hacking. In email correspondence with The Huffington Post, Frank said he thinks EEG devices present an unique vector for cyberattacks.
“The experiments have demonstrated that an attacker with access to the raw EEG signal can guess secrets of the end-user significantly better compared with random guessing. This means that, once this technology is used by more people and once there are more apps written by third-party developers, there is the chance that malicious software attacks the user’s privacy,” Frank wrote.
But as malicious as mind reading may seem, EEG devices also have the power to enhance existing technologies that enable humanitarian endeavors. Christine King, a biomedical engineering student at the University of California at Irvine, recently built and tested mind-controlled robotic legs that could eventually succeed in restoring ‘brain-controlled ambulation’ to the paralyzed. In an email to The Huffington Post, King said she’s optimistic about EEG devices’ potential to “increase the independence and quality of life” of those with injuries that restrict mobility. The legs are currently in the earliest stages of development, confined to indoor treadmills and tested only on subjects who are not paralyzed, but the latest research from King’s team indicates that paralyzed testers may try the legs in the near future.
Low is hoping to speed up such medical advances with his newest product: a device the size of a U.S. quarter that he plans to release sometime next year. Low’s “iBrain 3” will be the first FDA-approved EEG device on the market, which means it can be used for medical as well as recreational purposes. Low said his goal is to drive the cost of the product down to less than $100 in order to “have a lot of people using it.” With all the applications the world has already found for EEG technology — video games, computer games, painting, composing, mind-controlling cat ears, even letting people walk again — a tiny EEG for under $100 may be just what it takes to make mind reading go mainstream.
But in that process, Low may be his own worst enemy. While he hopes to make the iBrain 3 commercially viable, Low insists that he doesn’t want it used for “some gizmo for people to buy at Christmas.” Low hopes the product will be used as a tool for serious medical research, he said. However, he plans to make the API for the iBrain 3 public — which means he won’t be able to control what “gizmos” people make for the single-channel device after NeuroVigil begins to sell it.
And with the advent of single-channel EEG, the “gizmos” are becoming ever-more common. Remember Neurowear’s “Shippo” tail that reads your thoughts? How about DARPA’s mind reading, enemy-spotting binoculars? With EEG now simpler than ever, these devices are just the beginning.

DescriptionWho needs itHow it worksScience behindSpecification
MINDO is the first B2C product for neurofeedback by BrainBit
The system involves the use of a mobile application with the BrainBit neural interface. The application visualizes the activity of brain rhythms in the form of a game situation to control the objects while playing, video sequence or background music. In the process of the game, conditioned reflex training of the nervous system occurs, it is called neurofeedback. Such training is a neurotherapeutic technique aimed at training various brain functions.

Neurofeedback training helps you to learn how to meditate, quickly relax, get rid of stress, fall asleep or concentrate using built-in protocols, as well as get statistics, new levels and achievements.

MINDO is a wireless EEG headband with dry electrodes. The device is very comfortable and soft that will help you to properly tune in to work with your mind and will not draw you away from the process.

A device that can read people’s minds by detecting their brainwaves has been developed in a breakthrough that could eventually enable people with “locked-in syndrome” to communicate.
The system was only partially effective with a 90 per cent success rate when trying to recognise numbers from zero to nine and a 61 per cent rate for single syllables in Japanese, the researchers said.
But, nonetheless, a statement about the research issued by the Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan said it showed that an effective device to read people’s thoughts and relay them to others was possible in the “near future”.
They even suggested an “easily operated” device with a smartphone app could be ready in just five years.

- Brain activity appears to continue after people are dead
An electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to monitor people’s brain waves while they spoke.
The brain waves were then matched to the syllables and numbers using “machine learning”, a process used to develop artificial intelligence.
The statement said the researchers had “developed a technology that can recognise the numbers zero to nine with 90 per cent accuracy using brain waves, or electroencephalogram (EEG), while uttering the numbers”.
“At the same time, 61 per cent accuracy in 18 Japanese monosyllable recognition was achieved, outperforming performance in previous research (humans have sufficient intelligibility of sentences with an 80 per cent monosyllable recognition rate).”

The researchers said other attempts to use brain waves to understand people’s thoughts had struggled to understand what was being “said”.
“Up until now, speech-decoding from EEG signals has had difficulty in collecting enough data to allow the use of powerful algorithms based on ‘deep learning’ or other types of machine learning,” the statement said.
“The research group has developed a different research-framework that can achieve high performance with a small training data-set.”
They now plan to develop a “brain-computer interface” that can recognise words that are merely thought and not spoken.
“This technology may enable handicapped people, who have lost the ability of voice-communication, to obtain the ability once again,” the statement said.
“It is also expected that the technology would give a healthy person the most natural interface without any limitations as well.

“Furthermore, the research group plans to develop a device that can be easily operated with fewer electrodes and connected to smartphones within the next five years.”
The statement was released ahead of a conference later this year where the research will be presented in more detail.
A separate study published earlier this year found that brain activity continued for about 10 minutes after a person was declared clinically dead.
Similar brain waves as found during sleep were reported during this period.

By Rizwan Virk, founder of Play Labs @ MIT
In the blockbuster 1990 film “Total Recall,” Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a construction worker who goes into Rekall Inc. and sits in a chair with a device that plugs into his brain. The device is meant to give him false memories of a vacation to Mars, which is much more affordable (and less time-consuming) than taking an actual trip off planet. The movie, based on a short story by science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, quickly devolves into a dark exploration of how such control of memories plays into a dystopian future in which no one is quite sure what’s real and what isn’t.
There’s a rush to bring invasive devices to market that promise to reach sci-fi levels of reading our thoughts, memories, intentions and actions.
Dick wrote the short story in the 1960s, and the movie featured one of the first popular instances of what we now call a brain-computer interface, or BCI, in which a computer is able to read what’s happening in your mind, or, more disturbingly, write information into your brain via electrical signals. While noninvasive BCIs that read basic brain wave information have been around for years in labs, today there’s a rush to bring invasive devices to market that promise to reach sci-fi levels of reading your thoughts, memories, intentions and actions.
While the science to connect our brains to computers is slowly becoming a reality and the near-term applications will mostly benefit society, the dangers of dystopian applications are becoming more real, too. As a result, we urgently need to start grappling with the legal, ethical and moral issues.
The most recent significant unveiling of BCI technology came from Mars-bound SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the end of August. He gave a much-anticipated demo of the product of his startup Neuralink, which is building a device that will allow wireless communication between a brain and the internet through a surgical implant.

Why Apple is so much worse than Facebook and Google
While there is no talk (yet) of writing memories using Neuralink, Musk said, without giving a specific time frame, that you will definitely be able to use it to “telepathically” summon your Tesla. Musk, no stranger to making bold predictions, believes using BCIs will soon allow you to stream music directly into your brain and, after that, download your memories onto silicon. Musk believes this could begin within 10 years, though many neuroscientists believe it will take much longer.
The end game, Musk has revealed, is to merge the human brain with artificial intelligence, making us smarter and more able to compete with superintelligent artificial intelligence, ultimately preventing an AI apocalypse. The demo itself was much less ambitious — a pig named Gertrude had the Neuralink device installed in its brain, which sent out signals in real time that could be seen on a tablet and heard as a series of beeps.

Paralyzed man walks with brain-controlled exoskeleton

Neuralink is an invasive BCI, which surgically embeds tiny microwires (thinner than a human hair) with electrodes that detect signals from individual neurons. This kind of BCI Is known today as a neural lace, a term inspired by the science fiction books of Iain Banks, in which a future spacefaring civilization implants a neural lace in the young, leading to a more “intelligent” citizenry connected to and augmented by AI.
Unlike Neuralink, noninvasive BCIs have been around for a while in the form of biofeedback devices. These rely on EEG signals measured by commercially available headbands or nodes on the scalp in a lab.

Short-term applications of noninvasive BCIs are well underway, including using EEG headbands to help reduce stress and improve meditation and to control interfaces with computers and video games. Boston-based startup Neurable showed a demo of a person controlling objects in virtual reality in 2017 using a combination of brain signals and eye-tracking in a VR headset. In 2019, Facebook, after buying CTRL-Labs for more than half a billion dollars, demoed “brain typing” — typing a message simply by thinking about words and phrases.
In any competitive arena in which response time matters, a neural interface can provide an edge of several hundred milliseconds. A startup called Brink Bionics has created a glove that measures electrical signals along the nerves of the arm, giving a decisive edge in supercompetitive first-person shooter video games.

Recently, an AI pilot beat a human fighter pilot in a limited simulated dogfight. Of course, the human pilot experienced the delay of signals moving from brain to hands, while the AI had no such disadvantage. As depicted in the 1980s Cold War movie “Firefox,” direct mind-to-fighter interface could provide such a disproportionate advantage to one side that the U.S. is willing to risk sending Clint Eastwood to the Soviet Union to steal the futuristic jet. (One snag is that once he finally gets into the plane, he realizes he has to “think” in Russian, a language he learned as a child.)
When it comes to invasive BCIs, those who are horrified at the thought of cutting open a healthy skull to implant wires and a chip should be happy to know that the first applications for Musk’s Neuralink and similar technology will most likely be to help those with brain-related injuries and illnesses, from ALS to strokes to spinal cord injuries to muscular dystrophy.
This requires sharing your brain data so they can be merged with and compared to data from a large sample of others.
While most of these focus on reading intentions from the brain and then bypassing neural pathways that aren’t working in order to move limbs and prosthetics, there’s also the possibility of bypassing injured areas to send information directly into the brain, allowing the blind to see, for example. In general, these devices will require approval from the Food and Drug Administration to show that they are safe before they can be implanted in humans (though Musk said Neuralink recently got a special “breakthrough device” clearance from the FDA so it can move more quickly).
But as we look beyond these therapeutic or response-time applications to those that read and transmit thoughts and memories, a whole host of issues comes up. The real difficulty — and this is true for both invasive and noninvasive approaches — is to understand what specific electrical signals mean, whether it is a memory, a choice, an intention, a daydream, etc. This requires sharing your brain data so they can be merged with and compared to data from a large sample of others. The only way for your Tesla to know that you want to summon it is to match your brain signals with those it has previously stored.
Related
Machine beats man in aerial dogfight between AI and fighter pilot. Should we be scared?
While noninvasive BCIs have thus far been effective only in applications with small numbers of choices (pick A or B or C; move the mouse to the left or the right), invasive BCIs promise much more granular data from individual neurons (of which the brain has on the order of 80 billion) that could represent almost unlimited thoughts and options.
To categorize these patterns of neurons into a usable framework will be a more complex task than mapping the human genome, making it impossible without AI and machine learning acting on large databases of brain patterns from selected populations. And so AI will be involved in BCIs whether we intend it to or not. This raises issues around privacy and security, as well as problems inherent in AI and machine learning, such as racial and selection bias.

Going further, the ambition to use invasive BCIs to decode memories and “download” them onto servers isn’t limited to Neuralink. If these efforts succeed, they could be incredibly beneficial, for instance by allowing people with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones to relive experiences as memory loss becomes a thing of the past.

OPINIONWhen my husband brought home a fake Christmas tree, I considered divorce

OPINIONTom Brady is finally going to lose. What a relief.
But decoding and storing memories raise a new set of ethical, moral and legal questions. For instance, who would own these memories after a person has died? Could the police obtain warrants to search through memories? Given that memory itself isn’t completely reliable, could memories be used in lawsuits? How could we ensure that unscrupulous professionals don’t sell or share them?
On the (even) darker side, if we decode memories and then are able to send in signals to play back or even tamper with them, we’ll find ourselves in “Total Recall” territory. In that case, can people’s memories ever be trusted going forward if there’s the potential for them to be altered? How do we separate truth from fiction about the past when memories can be altered?
And we haven’t even started talking about the potential for hacking.
Perhaps even more relevant today is that if big tech companies are allowed to integrate brain data with other personal data (such as one’s profession, criminal record, etc.), AI will almost certainly be tasked with finding correlations between “thoughts” and behaviors — and we then move into a fully dystopian scenario.
Could the police obtain warrants to search through memories? Given that memory itself isn’t completely reliable, could memories be used in lawsuits?
Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report,” another film adapted from the mind of Philip K. Dick, depicts this troubling possibility. In this future, naturally telepathic humans, called “pre-cogs,” are able to predict whether a person is going to commit a crime, which then triggers, through a neural connection, an alert to the pre-crime division, which rushes to arrest the suspect before he or she has broken the law. Technology (AI and a large amount of BCI data) could replace the supernatural pre-cogs, leading to a new kind of surveillance state and very troubling consequences for free and open societies.
We are, of course, still years (or decades) away from being able to realize many of these predictions. But the measuring, storing and analyzing of neural data that will result from brain-computer interfaces’ hitting the market will start to happen soon. We need to think through these issues, providing guidelines and checks on potential abuses, before moving from today’s narrow applications to more general purpose BCIs.
Otherwise we might just find ourselves in the middle of a Philip K. Dick novel after all.

7 leading Brain-Computer Interface Companies and their current and prospective products
Many have said that the brain and mind are the final frontier of science. Indeed, very little is known about that gray mass of cells in our skull that plays an important role in cognition; regulation of heart, lung, and other systems and functions; movement, and more. With approximately 100 billion neural connections, our brains are capable of processing billions of bits of information per second. The latest trend in unlocking the mysteries of the mind is brain-computer interfaces.
In the public sector, initiatives such as the Human Brain Project have sought to accelerate research that can help us learn more about our own brains, in order to be able to better treat diseases and improve cognitive functioning.
In the private sector, a number of companies are working to develop effective brain-machine interfaces for a wide range of uses. Read on to learn more about seven companies focused on direct communication from human brains to machines and the technologies and approaches they are using to make the future arrive faster.
Neuralink
Founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the ultimate goal of Neuralink is to create a symbiosis between the human brain and AI, specifically merging computers with the human brain. They are building devices that will help people with paralysis, memory loss, hearing loss, blindness and other neurological problems. Ongoing projects seek to outfit the human brain with thin threadlike electrodes – sewing the ‘threads’ into the brain — so that the brain’s cells can be directly accessed and manipulated using artificial intelligence.
The company has looked to academia to hire several high-profile neuroscientists who can lend their expertise to developing the new frontier of brain-machine interfaces. Since its founding in 2016, Neuralink has received a total of $373 million in funding with the latest round raised on July 14, 2022
Neurable
Neurable describes itself as a company focused on bringing technology from the lab into the real world so that neurotechnology is simple and accessible enough to use in your everyday life. For them, that is creating cognitive measurement tools and developing a way to measure the brain’s emotional state, specifically designed for attention, which could be even more specifically defined and understood as “cognitive load.” The company made news in 2017 for inventing the world’s first brain-controlled virtual reality (VR) game where players wore an EEG headset while they sat in front of a computer and were asked to drive a remote-controlled car around with their minds.
Today, they are in conversations with various wings of the military to use Neurable devices to increase performance for the military with the goal of reducing training time. In June 2021, they launched their Enten Headphones: Smart Headphones for Smarter Focus Habits on IndieGoGo which received $231,000 from 1,051 backers. Neuralink’s total corporate funding to date amounts to $9.3 million.
Emotiv
Emotiv is a builder of wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring headsets for scientific research and personal use. These spans an amazing variety of potential industries and applications – from gaming to interactive television, everyday computer interactions, hands-free control system, smart adaptive environments, art, accessibility design, market research, psychology, learning, medicine, robotics, automotive, transport safety, defense and security.
The Emotiv headset range consists of the top-of-the-line Epoc Flex for professionals and Insight for consumer use. These come with their corresponding apps called Emotiv Pro and Emotiv BCI. Needless to say these cover any level of research whether from controlled laboratory settings to the hobbyist wanting to monitor his own brain functions.
Kernel
Kernel is building the next generation of brain measurement systems by leveraging the strengths of time domain-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-fNIRS). Their Kernel Flow debuted in 2021 and is the world’s first wearable full-head coverage TD-fNIRS system that maintains or improves on the performance of existing benchtop systems and has the potential to achieve its mission of making neuro measurements mainstream.
The original goal of Kernel was to develop a way to store memories outside of the brain, and upload new memories to the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center. In 2017, their founder and CEO Bryan Johnson talked about boosting human intelligence using neural chip implants. Like Neuralink, Kernel has also been recruiting academic researchers who can contribute their expertise to accelerate the pace of innovation.
NextMind
NextMind technology decodes the attentional focus from your brain activity and allows you to control digital interfaces directly with your mind, in real-time. The NextMind Dev Kit offers an easy solution for anyone wanting to create mind-controlled applications, without having to deal with the technical challenges of brain signal processing.
They made waves at CES 2020 for its wearable brain-sensing device, the first of its kind in the industry. A fancy EEG that can record the brain’s electrical activity, the NextMind brain sensing device is lightweight and uses machine learning to translate EEG activity into commands. As described by NextMind’s founder Sid Kouider, this is a step up from eye-tracking software used for years to seek and examine cognition noninvasively. In March 2022, NextMind was acquired by Snap for an undisclosed sum.
MELTIN MMI
Because environment-changing technologies are reaching a saturation point, MELTIN is developing technologies that allow us to change our bodies to suit our environments.
Founded in 2013, MELTIN’s first goal was to recreate the hand, the most intricate portion of our bodies. Their MELTANT-α/β cyborg is a robotic hand used by a human user to create motions as similar as possible to our own hands while adding features such as enhanced flexibility, speed, strength, power, and accuracy. On the medical front, they offer the MELTz Hand Rehabilitation System for patients with hand paralysis such as those recovering from a stroke. The company has now set its sights on other modalities beyond movement, such as vision.
Bitbrain

Bitbrain is a brain technology company that combines neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and hardware to develop high-tech EEG brain sensing devices and other human monitoring technologies, together with software solutions for real-world applications and research. Bitbrain is recognized as a world reference for B2B neurotechnology solutions.
Launched in 2010 by researchers at the University of Zaragoza in Spain, Bitbrain offers a slew of state-of-the-art wearables and monitoring software. The product applications range from controlled laboratories to society at large which have informed the neuromarketing and cognitive enhancement fields.
———-
The future of brain-computer interfaces remains exciting. With the advance in machine learning and artificial intelligence tools, coupled with the increasing power of computer processors, it may not be long until the neurotechnologies championed by these companies become a reality.

TECHNOLOGY FOR NEUROHACKERS & BIOHACKERS: TOOLS DESIGNED TO UPGRADE THE MIND, BRAIN AND BODY
TOOLS DESIGNED TO UPGRADE THE MIND, BRAIN AND BODY

Some experts, such as Elon Musk and Ian Pearson, are in a sort of a technology race. They see a need for humans to keep pace with artificial intelligence and incorporate technology into our own design.
Neurohackers and biohackers might agree, but at a more basic level, they see technology as an indispensable tool that can enable a better version of humanity. If you’re someone who wants more from yourself and your life and loves the idea of using both natural resources and technology to get it, you’re essentially adopting the mindset of a neurohacker or a biohacker.
For a broad view of what the neurohacking tech space offers, check out our infographic Technologies of Neurohacking. It offers a high-level taxonomy of tools, therapies, and techniques to bring optimal health to our physiology and psychology. If you’re someone who thinks about getting more out of life and yourself, you’re likely to find something essential on this list.

According to Market Research Future, the global biohacking market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.42% between 2018 and 2023. As the 3D printing and smart drug industries continue to develop, neurohackers and biohackers will benefit, creating individualized prostheses, drugs, and implants to enhance their abilities. This, in turn, will benefit personalized medicine and 3D technologies.
Meanwhile, user interfaces will continue to become more sophisticated, enabling us to connect with computers, devices, and each other in new ways. Brain-computer interfaces will be on the market by 2040, making advanced neurohacking a reality. Superintelligence will be one possible result, and as we learn to overcome things like lack of memory by “syncing” with the web, we will be able to do more than we previously imagined.
But for now, you can use the tech we already have to maximize your abilities and potential, and to live your best life. Here are some technologies we already enjoy to optimize our sleep and brain function—and track our progress on our journeys toward better health and fuller lives.
From air and water filters to therapy lights, to exercise tools this list has a little of everything for neurohackers.
Joovv Light
Full-body red light therapy. Designed to hang on the back of your door. A few benefits from red light therapy include fading scars and stretch marks, reducing joint inflammation, to increasing testosterone production. $25 off using promo code Neurohacker.
Oura Ring
The new Oura smart ring is devised to be the world’s most advanced wearable. Designed to be worn on a finger around the clock, it empowers you to see how your lifestyle affects your body and mind. Oura gives feedback on sleep, heart rate variability, and temperature. Get $75 off using promo code Neurohacker.
Vielight Neuro Alpha
The Vielight Neuro Alpha is a transcranial-intranasal near infrared(NIR) headset, engineered for increased efficacy and easy domestic use for comprehensive brain photobiomodulation. Essentially the process energizes neuronal mitochondria which trigger a cascade of beneficial cellular events.
Thera360 Portable Sauna
The Thera360 Portable Sauna features exclusive Natural Earth Element Infrared heating panels, with natural Tourmaline gemstones, to generate an abundance of negative ions, and bathe your body from every angle in gentle full spectrum Infrared frequencies and negative ions.
The CHILIPAD™ Cube
The ChiliPad™ Cube is a mattress pad with a cooling and heating temperature control system. It regulates the surface temperature of your mattress by actively circulating water through a network of micro tubes.
AquaTru
AquaTru is a countertop reverse osmosis water purifier that is certified to create bottled quality water from your tap. No plumbing or installation required.
Vitamin C Filter Inline Shower Assembly by Sonaki
This shower filter removes up to 99.9% of Chlorine and Chloramines from your shower water. It attaches easily to your existing arm at one end and then to the existing showerhead at the other, without affecting the height or positioning of the showerhead.

X3 Bar
The X3 was created from existing scientific research showing that variable resistance training (as provided by elastic bands) is far more effective than using other, conventional methods. Made from specially machined alloy steel with internal bearings, like an olympic bar so that grip is optimized at all times.

JumpSport 350
The act of rebounding works every muscle of the body; it is a true total body workout which improves your muscle-to-fat ratio. Jumping boosts metabolism and improves resting metabolic rate so you can burn calories long after a workout.
ActiGraph
The ActiGraph GT9X Link is powered by Bluetooth®Smart technology and offers a variety of wireless features, including heart rate monitoring, proximity detection, activity and sleep monitoring.
Zeo Sleep Manager Pro
The Zeo Sleep Manager Pro system consists of a lightweight true EEG brainwave monitor “pod” which snaps onto a replaceable and adjustable headband. The company that made Zeo went out of business (which is unfortunate because there’s no other affordable sleep gadget that duplicates what this does), but some can currently be found for sale on eBay.
Fitbit Alta
Tracks heart rate, activity, and automatically tracks sleep and sleep stages. Also integrates with your phone for call, text and calendar alerts.
BEDDIT 3 Sleep Monitor
If wearables aren’t your thing, try Beddit–a device you place under your sheets. The app gives daily data so you can better understand your sleep patterns.
f.lux
f.lux is a software app that can be used to automatically adjusts the color of your computer’s display to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. By removing the blue light out of your computer screen at night, it aids in keeping your circadian timing in check and prevents the blue light disrupting effects on melatonin.
Blue Light Blocking Glasses
Swannies, blue light blocking glasses let you watch TV, computer screens, and your phone before bed without the adverse effects of blue light. Blue light in the morning can promote wakefulness neurochemistry, but it’s not what we need when our brain is trying to get ready for a great night’s sleep.
Did you find a new way to optimize your health and performance? Mindfully taking charge of your existence and getting more from your time is a great way to hack into your own consciousness and achieve a higher level. Try some of these top tech solutions for neurohackers, and share your experiences with us.
